April 4: Government sources said that
the use of the word “critical” for the first time in the hospital’s
bulletin to describe Sri Satya Sai Baba’s health had agitated the
devotees who smashed the windscreen of Anantapur district collector,
Mr Janardhan Reddy’s car when he tried to enter the hospital late on
Monday evening. Despite the medical bulletin, sources in the
government maintained that Baba’s condition was stable and there was
no need to worry. “His condition is stable as it was two days back. He is showing signs of improvement,” the official said. After the medical update, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, too inquired about the Baba’s health. Devotees, meanwhile, thronged the hospital and also Prashanti Nilayam, the Baba’s residence. Some wept uncontrollably while others were seen anxiously inquiring about his health. Hotels, shops and other petty kiosks downed shutters and groups huddled in street corners as the police increased security and put up barricades at sensitive places. At the hospital, irate devotees demanded that they be allowed to see Satya Sai Baba. Protesters argued that they wanted the doctors to come out with the truth. The devotees also turned their ire on the media and asked newsmen to leave the hospital area and OB vans were forced to leave. They alleged that the media was unnecessarily playing up Baba’s illness and had made such claims in the past too forcing the hospital to issue daily bulletins. “I am still confident that he will recover. I told him several times to take care of his health. He did not listen,” said Amma Sai Eramma, a Russian devotee of the Baba who has settled in Puttaparthi. Sri Satya Sai Baba is suffering from heart, kidney and respiratory problems and a team of specialists are treating him round the clock. The Chief Minister has also deputed a team of doctors, led by Dr Ravi Raj, director of medical education, to monitor the Baba’s condition and report to the government. The medical bulletin issued by the hospital at 10.30 am on Monday had stated that the Baba continued to show improvement. “He is still on assisted ventilation and on kidney support through CRRT, which is a process of slow dialysis. All other clinical parameters are nearly normal.” http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/hyderabad/baba-ventilator-kidney-support- 924 |

April 3: An eerie silence prevails over Puttaparthi, the ashram of Bhagwan Satya Sai Baba, who was admitted to the Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences Super Specialty Hospital on March 28 for heart and other ailments. A pacemaker was implanted and he was put on dialysis on Sunday as his urea levels increased drastically while his urine volume reduced. Devotees will miss the Baba’s famed Ugadi (Telugu New Year’s day) darshan and blessings. They have been enquiring about the Baba’s health but the hospital authorities have barred the entry of visitors fearing spread of infection. Docs says Sai Baba condition is stable A medical bulletin pasted on the wall gives an update of the Satya Sai Baba’s progress. His condition is said to be stable and his vital parameters are satisfactory. Dr A.N. Safaya, director of the hospital told this newspaper on Sunday that the Baba is on ventilator support for assisting respiration. “He has undergone one dialysis to assist his kidney function. Overall, his condition is satisfactory,” the doctor said. He said the team of doctors attending on Sai Baba is satisfied with his response to the treatment. “Constant watch is kept on his health condition by the medical team.” On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, and the health minister, Dr D.L. Ravindra Reddy, a high-level team of specialty doctors arrived in Puttaparthi to monitor the progress and provide advice to doctors attending on Baba. The team is led by Dr Ravi Raj, director of medical education, and includes Dr Shyam Sundar and Dr Nitin Kabra. Dr Raj said Sai Baba was admitted to hospital as he developed a slowing heart rate. The heart beat was below 60. A permanent pacemaker has been implanted and an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is also being used. “If we don’t see marked improvement even after dialysis, we will shift to CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy),” Dr Ravi Raj said. CRRT is a mode of renal replacement therapy for hemodynamically unstable, fluid overloaded patients and patients with sepsis and septic shock in management of acute renal failure especially in the intensive care unit setting. The minister for major industries, Dr Geetha Reddy, an ardent devotee of Baba, is camping here since three days. “Baba’s health condition is satisfactory. The doctors have reviewed his health condition with hospital doctors,” she said. However, Baba’s confidantes are angry at the exaggerated reports of his health condition reported on some TV channels. To counter them, Baba’s local channel Sai Darshan is appealing to devotees not to worry about his health and not to believe TV channels reports.
