Why do we like some and dislike others? Are there some basic principles which explain these? The Divine Master explains to us in absolute clear terms today.

Ignoring the unity of all mankind in the Divine Soul, one relishes in quarrels and factions. He classifies some among his contemporaries as friends and some as his foes. Duality is the making of an individual. It is their own likes and dislikes, prejudices and passions that is reflected, and that creates all these reactions of love and hatred - it is the resounding echo of faction and friction. Friendship and enmity arise from your heart; they are labels fixed by you, not marks which other people are born with. The same person is the thickest friend of one and the mortal enemy of another - both because of his one act or word. Realize this truth and live in unity.

- BABA (Divine Discourse, May 11, 1975.)

What are the underlying reasons for illness? What is the remedy? Swami explains to us today. 7th Sep 2009

Illness is caused by the malnutrition of the mind than of body. Doctors speak of vitamin deficiency; I will call it the deficiency of 'Vitamin G' and I will recommend the repetition of the Name of God with accompanying contemplation of the glory and grace of God. That is the 'Vitamin G'. That is the medicine. Regulated life and habits are two-thirds of the treatment, while the medicine is only one-third.
- Baba (Divine Discourse, April 28, 1975 )

What is the first and most important lesson in the spiritual journey? Swami makes it very clear to us today.

The very first lesson in the primer of spiritual text is "Control of Speech." Speech is the armament of the man. Through the sweetness of speech, one can disarm all opposition and defeat all the designs of hatred. Sweetness makes you Pashupathi (Divine); harshness makes you pashu (bestial). Mere outward politeness is hypocrisy. Sincere speech must flow from real sweetness of heart, a heart full of love.

- Baba (Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol 5, Ch 27, 4-Apr-1965. )

What is our real nature and destiny? Swami tells us today.

-Man is Sathyam, Shivam and Sundharam (Truth, Goodness and Beauty). That is why he is drawn by the true, the beautiful and the good. He hates being labeled a liar or an ugly person or a bad character! Man has to go out of his way, take special pains, to tread the path of falsehood; it is more difficult for him to sustain a lie than support the truth. So, man is turning back on his destiny when he revels in falsehood, ugliness and wickedness...Man is bound to God, by the same destiny. He can get sound and sweet sleep only in the lap of God. Separated from Him, he can only wail.
- Baba ( Divine Discourse, March 1st, 1968 )

What is the first step we should take to fill our heart with noble feelings? The Divine Master clarifies to us today.

-The arishadvargas (six inner enemies - desire, anger, greed, infatuation, pride and jealousy) are responsible for one's misconduct and suffering. If one behaves in the same way as animals, in what way is one superior to them? When one makes proper use of intellect, one will not suffer. All matters relating to the world are like passing clouds. When God is present in everyone and everywhere, how is that one faces hardship and misery? The reason is that one has filled their heart with bestial tendencies. One has to drive them out and cleanse the heart. For instance, in a tumbler filled with water, if you want to fill it with milk, the water has to be poured out. Similarly in order to fill your heart with noble feelings, you have to get rid of the evil qualities. - Baba ( Divine Discourse, Oct 10, 2002 )

When is it that we have to get rid of to lead a light and happy life? Swami teaches us today.

- Reduce the luggage you carry about when on the journey of life. Remember, all that is not "you" is luggage. You are not the body, so the body is an item of luggage. The mind, the senses, the intelligence, the imagination, the desires, the plans, the prejudices, the discontent, the distress, etc. are all items of luggage. Jettison them soon, so as to make your travel lighter, safer and more comfortable. - BABA ( Sathya Sai Speaks, Vol. 7.)

How should we react to depressing events in our life? Swami tells us today.

When you are depressed by what appears to be loss or calamity, engage yourselves in Naamasmarana, the recitation and recollection of the Names of the Lord; that will give you consolation, courage and true perspective. Remember the distress and calamity that the saints underwent with enthusiastic welcome and be calm during every storm. People laughed at them and called them mad; but they knew that they were in the Grace Hospital of God, not the mental hospital of man. They had full faith in their destiny and so they had full faith in God; they laughed when calamities tried to cow their eagerness, for they knew their latent strength of the Atma (spirit) within.

What is the single most important facet that we must comprehend about this creation? Swami tells us today.

Doubts are raised whether God exists or not. Those who affirm that God exists and those who deny are equally incompetent to say anything about God if they know nothing about the nature of God... God is Omnipresent. There is no need to search for Him anywhere. Everything that we see is a manifestation of God. Wherever we are, there is God. There can be no greater folly than to deny the existence of God when the whole cosmos bears witness to His handiwork. Everything in creation must be viewed as a manifestation of God. Only with this basic faith can one develop one's human personality. - Baba ( Divine Discourse, September 26, 1987)
