FEATURE OF THE WEEK: A higher level of faith and perception Is Sai Baba God or could that be He was just a man with a few unique powers and peculiarities? This was also a question raised about two thousand years ago with Christ, was Jesus Christ a man or a magician? Discussions on - the father, the son and the Holy Spirit' is still a popular topic at churches all over. Where does the answer lie to the question whether Sai Baba was an ordinary man with a few powers or the manifestation of the supreme conscious that eludes common rationale? Let us see a wonderful passage from "Glimpses of Sai Baba" by Shri Narasimhaswami ji: "As to how Sri Sai Baba is to be regarded, there is wide divergence of views, not merely among religions, sects and people, but also within one's stage of the spiritual growth. Many regard Him as both God and man, just as Tennyson did in case of Jesus Christ. Thou seemest human and divine
There are many who are hovering about this level, in their view of Sai Baba-now, disposed to submit and surrender, and pray to Him as God, again disposed to regard Him as a highly developed personality acting as their guardian angel or at least as a benevolent but more gifted man, with human frailties and other human peculiarities. Some devotees, if they analyze their perception from time to time, might discover that they can not fix themselves to one particular view of Sai Baba always, but are involuntarily moved from one to the other viewpoints mentioned above and even to pass beyond these, even to the extent of doubting whether Sai Baba is or is not good and powerful. Such is human weakness that one need not be ashamed to discover his own position in the last named class. But commonsense, and higher impulses naturally drive us to quit such a useless, nay, pernicious state and strive to reach higher levels of faith and perception. |
CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: Raghuvir Bhaskar Purandhare (continued from last week) Sri Sai never talked in my presence about Adwaita, etc. He said always "Allah will Protect," "God protects us all, the poor etc. He never said in my presence that He (Sai) is in all. But he often identified himself with God. He said "whoever steps into the Masjid, reaches his goal, If you act in a good, way, good really will follow." I do not remember his talking of Pranayama, Kundal-ini, etc., and I never cared for these. N.S.Chandorkar said, Baba knew Sanskrit. Baba took up Bhagavata, etc., and pointed out passages to people as especially suitable for them. This supports N.S.C. Baba's foreknowledge of his own death: Two years before 1918 Dusserah, Le., Dusserah of 1916 Baba burnt all his Kupny, langote and headkerchief which he took off saying "This is my Simollangan". People make Shami worship and present Shami leaves to each other and cross their frontier, as though they were having a successful raid on that day. When people asked him why he burnt out his clothes on this special holiday, he said, "This is my Simolanghan," i,e., "crossing the border." Two hours later, he wore new clothes, Kupni, langotee and headkerchief - just as all people wear new clothes on that day. He remained two hours naked after burning the clothes he wore and was fierce. People forced him to wear these new clothes then, which were always ready by the dozen. Baba told Ramachandra Dada Patel (who was ill then) that Tatya Patel - the head of his family - 'would go away on this day, after two years'. Two years after that, Tatya was seriously ill. Baba also was ill for a week before Dusserah; Baba gave up the body and Tatya recovered; So people say that Baba gave up his own life to save Tatya's, Le., in exchange of Tatya's. Such examples we find in the lives of other saints. Even now, Baba is saving life. Here is an instance. In 1932 - I was hopelessly ill of Sciatica and Rheumatism. I then saw Yamadutas near me. But Sai Baba came up, sat on my bed, took my hand on his knee and prevented Yamadutas touching me or my bed. I was saved. I was very passionate, i e., hot tempered. He told me often "If anybody comes and abuses you or punishes you, do not quarrel with him. If you cannot endure it, speak a simple word or two or else go away from the place. But do not battle with him and behave like that. I feel sick and disgusted when you quarrel with others. He said this to me and to others also several times. Twelve or fifteen days before S.'s death, he drove away myself and Dixit to Bombay. He told us, ' I will go further and you follow me." He gave us permission to go, at the Masjid saying, "my Turbat (Tomb) will speak: my name also will speak, my mutti, i.e., clay will give you replies" and told us to clear away. We went away in a bullock cart. He had no disease at the time and we did not expect his death then. He had spoken these words previously and we did not understand their import or importance. Baba never talked in my presence of the goal of life or about Mukti, or Swarga or Paradise. He said once "I will take my Kaka in Vimana." In 1926 on an Ekadasi in perfect peace and talking of Baba, Kaka Dixit suddenly expired. Baba has often said to me and to others, "He who is mine, even if he dies 1000 miles off, I will drag him to myself just as we draw a sparrow with a thread" and to many people he said, "I will not allow my man to get away from me." I saw some devotees dying at Shirdi on Ekadasi. They must have got Swarga thus. Baba did not, to my knowledge, describe Kylash, Vykuntha, Swarga or Mok-sha. In 1914-6 or so, Baba was asked by a lady, "When will I get a good birth? Baba: "In your next birth." Next day, she jumped into a well to end her life but was saved. He occasionally foretold the future. I never asked about my own future. Taking in Vimana" means Sadgati. (Contributed by continued.....) CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: continued.... Baba advised one Sagun Meru Naik to put some ghee on the rice and place the rice with ghee in the Dhuni (fire) as an offering and then bring the rest to him. This was in his (Sai Baba's) lifetime. Ever since then, S.M.N is doing this. Baba ate that food. That food was brought from his (S.M.N's) own house. Previous to that, his Naivedya had no ghee. The Naivedya is still continued by that man. (I have not seen Baba eating animal food). He told Fakirs to utter Fatya when Moslems made offerings. Once he asked me to give him all the old copper coins I had. I gave him all I had. I don't know what he did with them. He had old coins tied neatly in a cloth (so as not to make any jingling noise) and keep them in his side pockets. He asked me for Dakshina. I gave up everything. Once I thought I had nothing left of all my coins. Then Baba said, "you have still a two anna piece in your pocket. See." I saw and found it and gave him that also. He used to completely exhaust the finances of many in this way. I do not know with what object he did that. Some people asked him why he wanted so much money. Baba replied. "I am not asking of every one. I ask only from the man whom the Fakir (God) points out. But in exchange, I have to give that man ten times the money for my own use. I have no family etc." He used to give the money freely to all people, singers, tamashi. Fakirs, etc. He used to bring lots of fuel for his Dhunimayi -mother fire at the Dwarkamayi. The Tulasi grove (Brindavan) at the mosque was put up after 1909, 1911 or 1912. We all helped in that. The Mantap (or Tin shed) in front of the Masjid was put up in 1912. G.S. Khaparde explained Panchadashi, etc., in Sathe's Wada. Upasani Baba also attended there. I never attended, as I was busy with works always. Balvant Ramachandra Noolkar was a retired Sub-Judge. He came, lived and died at Shirdi. Sai Baba was seriously ill in 1915. He had Asthma. He would not eat anything then. He was breathing hard; I cried. Baba asked me "Why cry?" I said "I cannot see this state of yours. Baba said, "Don't fear. In two or four days I will be alright, Allah has given me this sickness and he will make me alright, within that period. You need not cry. I was remembering you the last two or three days and told Kaka to write to you to come." Kaka did not write. Sai Baba said "Do not write, he is coming himself. In fact, some how I went up during his illness, not knowing he was ill. He never took medicines for his illness as a rule. Even during his illness, he was supported and carried by the devotees to his begging place. There he would beg and come back and yet not eat the food. He carried on his usual routine of begging, lending, etc., even during all that illness. One day, during his illness, he climbed up the terrace of one house through a staircase, then went over to the next house terrace and over Radhakrishna's. Then a man lifted him up and brought him down to the ground and that man was paid by Baba, 3 or 4 rupees. Baba then said. "We must not get the labor of anyone for nothing." I saw all this. Ambulance-chair was then brought for him, but he never used it. Malegaonkar Fakir Baba (called Bade Baba. Bade Mia by Sai Baba) was getting most money. (To be continued..) (Contributed by from "Devotees Experiences of Sri Saibaba" by Pujyasri BV Narasimha Swamiji) CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: Ek Shyam Shri Sai Ke Naam - in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas! Imagine an enchanted evening of devoted ensemblement of great performers. Especially on a long weekend, setting the mood for a very relaxed evening on a Sunday! Spending some time with a group of Sai devotees was, in deed a blessing. The Sri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple of DFW (www.shirdisaidallas.org) and Shirdi Sai Baba Sanstha Chicago (www.saibaba.org) have provided the devotees, an evening of Sai Baba's greatness, by melodious rain of his praise, grace and blessings - all as songs and ghazals. The program "An evening of Sai Consciousness" viz "Ek Shaam Shri Sai Ke Naam" was held at Granville Arts center at Garland, Texas on September 3, 2006. It was a wonderful rendition of light classical Bhajans by Pandit Ajitkumar Kadkade accompanied by Mr Prakash Vagal on harmonium (key board) and Mr Rohidas Parab on Tabla. The program started with invocation of Shri Sai through Aarati in a well presented stage that maintained the ambience needed for the occasion. The introduction of the musicians was lucidly compeered by young devotees. With such an introduction, the expectations were well set in a compactly ambient theatre. The lobby was also graced with a beautiful portrait of SaiBaba, as is the dais inside the auditorium. The stage decor was not elaborate but was appropriate for the occasion. The audience was a balanced mix of senior and younger devotees. The songs were composed with a purpose of engaging the audience, which in deed, engaged them significantly with the applause that was synchronized as a rhythm. The audience was mesmerized by his rapturous ragas (tunes). Shri SaiBaba's grace has been reinvigorated in every devotee, only now, with much better clarity of what they read in Sai Satcharitra. The audience acknowledged and accepted the agile presentation of such intricate devotion of an esteemed singer with an ideal accompaniment. It is not an exaggeration to consider this evening as a Namajap, since the songs were divinely engaging!! The grand finale proved his forte in handling the Bhairavi raga recital 'O mere Sairam'. The program concluded by singing the prayer song on Shri Shirdi Sai Baba, after the felicitation of the artists by local dignitaries; which was followed by distribution of Maha-Prasad. An Evening of Sai is in fact, a boon to the devotees of DFW. This is just the beginning of the everlasting echoing of the songs of Sai in the hearts of the devotees, peacefully and purposefully. (Contributed by Vinay) CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE: Ek Shyam Shri Sai Ke Naam - in Bay Area, California! Thanks! to the Sai Parivar in the Bay Area for organizing such a wonderful Ek Shyam Shri Sai Ke Naam by Shri Ajitkumar Kadkade on Sep 4th, 2006. Word are too short to even express what I felt. All I could say is tears blurred my vision besides joy in my heart upon seeing the beautiful picture of Saibaba and to feel his aura through Ajitji's songs. I came to see my cousin who was visiting from out of town for the concert. My dearest friends and family who drove quite a distance upon my word, left saying that it was worth a drive and an evening not to be missed. Shri Ajitji and his troup mesmerized us through his devoted voice by singing lyrics that touched me tremendously. I am sure all of us felt so with clapping, singing, tunning, humming in whatever way we could float in Baba's devotion. When I first sat down I wondered when would the bhajan finish so that I could eat the prasad but as I got immersed in the music and Baba, I wanted more and more songs from Ajitji. Thanks to Ajitji and all for reminding me that 'All we have to do is to have Shraddha and Saboori on Baba' to walk each day of our life. (Contributed by Kavita) |

QUOTATION OF THE WEEK:
|
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Q. Does Baba test his devotees? A. by Nandini Aum bhakthaa-bhaya-pradhaaya namah Yes, I think Baba tests his devotees. The test can be simple or difficult but He always teaches something through that. We find numerous examples in the Satcharitra like Baba asking Kakasaheb Dikshit to taste the biriyani, asking him to get meat etc. There is also an instance where Baba's close devotee Shama says, "Sometimes Baba puts the devotees to severe test; and then gives them Upadesh." This severe test can be trying situations in our lives (as a part of our previous karma) wherein we come to the point of even losing ourselves. Baba gives a simple solution to this 'Hold onto Him with Faith and Patience'. He not only gives the solution but also makes us learn Faith and Patience. How does He do so? By giving us the test. It is only during the trying times there arises a real need for Faith and Patience, for during favorable times, they come to us easily and naturally. |
