PUTTAPARTHI: Anxiety levels rose in Puttaparthi on Wednesday as doctors announced that the health condition of Satya Sai Baba continued to be critical with the condition of the liver and intermittent low blood pressure causing concern.

All family members and close relatives of Satya Sai Baba apart from members of the Sri Satya Sai Central Trust have descended on Puttaparthi awaiting further news. In a health bulletin released in the evening, Sri Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences director Dr A L Safaya said Satya Sai Baba continued to be in a critical state of health but his vital parameters were being maintained at normal levels by giving adequate treatment with medicines.

The panel of doctors attending on the spiritual leader has been strengthened with the drafting of a team of government doctors led by Director of Medical Education T Ravi Raju, who is an eminent nephrologist. Dr Yegyaraman from the US, an eminent electro-physiology specialist, also joined the panel. Sai Baba continues to be under ventilation and doctors have decided to conduct another round of dialysis on Thursday.

Sources said Dr Ravi Raju rushed to Puttaparthi on Tuesday night after he was updated about the condition of the guru. Though the Satya Sai Institute authorities announced that Sai Baba’s panel of doctors had been reconstituted under the leadership of Dr Ravi Raju, reports indicated some of the doctors on the panel had been asked to leave.

Sources said the family members of Baba and Central Trust members were huddled in separate meetings throughout the day.

Trust implementing Baba schemes efficiently, says secretary Chakravarthi
TNN | Apr 20, 2011, 05.16am IST

PUTTAPARTHI: Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust secretary K Chakravarthi refuses to be drawn into the mudslinging carried out by 'certain forces'. "I leave it to their qualitative judgment and their conscience. Let people draw their own conclusions. I have nothing much to say," he said commenting on the happenings at Prashanti Nilayam.

Chakravathi said the trust members — S V Giri, former Central Vigilance Commissioner, and V Srinivasan, former national president, Confederation of Indian Industries along with another member and Saibaba's nephew R J Ratnakar were visiting Saibaba in the hospital and taking stock of the health situation. "Two other members — former CJI P N Bhagwati and Indulal Shah, chartered accountant, Mumbai — visit the super speciality hospital once in 15 days," he said.

Chakravarthi said he himself had not gone to see Saibaba in the ICU and added he had pretty much the same information as anybody else did. "We are briefed by medical experts and specialists who are attending on him." On allegations that the trust had neglected Saibaba's health in the last six months, he said he would not like to respond.

"The trust is run efficiently and implements all the seva schemes and programmes as devised by the swami. Till he fell sick on March 28, Saibaba was giving darshan to the devotees and passing on messages to them on carrying out various schemes. I am a hands-on-tool man and I work to the best of my abilities," he claimed.

Stating that he shared a special relationship with the swami for 30 years, Chakravarthi recalled that he had quit IAS when he was 45. "I was commissioner, commercial taxes, government of AP then when I took voluntary retirement to serve Saibaba," he said.

Asked whether he thinks Saibaba would regain his health, Chakravarthi said: "Hope is the best harbinger of life. We all hope. The doctors are doing a good job. There are some experts from the US who say the best medical attention is being given to Saibaba. We are all hoping he will give darshan soon." Sources said Chakravarthi is a member of Council of Management of the trust, which also has S S Naganand, eminent lawyer from Bangalore, J V Shetty, former chairman of Canara Bank, and T K K Bhagavat, former chairman of Indian Overseas Bank.

Confusion over Sai Baba’s health Chethan Kumar, Puttaparthi,

Confusion among people took a new shape over 85-year-old Sathya Sai Baba’s health on Sunday when Sri Sathya Sai Baba Institute of Higher Medical Sciences Director A N Safaya said that the Sathya Sai Central Trust had not consulted him before announcing that the godman could be shifted to his ashram.

The Trust had, late on Friday, said that if the Baba’s recovery continued the way it is “He could be shifted to his residence in Prashanthi Nilayam in about a fortnight.” It had said that the announcement was made after the required consultation with the doctors.  However, no member of the trust had signed the statement even as it was sent out from the official email address.

Safaya said: “No, there was no consultation with me. May be the trust felt that he could be shifted after the kind of response he (Baba) was showing.” As of now, Safaya said, there is no question of shifting him, as the godman continues to be critical. The Chief Gastroenterologist, Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, Hyderabad, D Nageshwar Reddy, who flew in to treat the Baba had said: “His liver, which was diagnosed with jaundice last week, has improved and will become normal in the next seven days…”

He had pointed out that the ammonia level in Baba’s liver had increased to 90 a couple of days ago, which was way above the normal rate. “We have managed to bring it down to 30, which is normal,” he said.

But Safaya, on Sunday said that the biluribin level has increased and that the liver is a cause for worry.  Three specialists from the US – Kalpalatha K Guntupalli, Shridhar Reddy and Srinivas Badriraj – consulted the panel of doctors on Saturday and said that they are satisfied with the kind of treatment.

Docs in dark about Saibaba's health before March 28

PUTTAPARTHI: The director of Satya Sai super-speciality hospital said on Sunday the hospital doctors were totally in the dark about Saibaba's health before March 28 when he was admitted there in a critical condition.

This has led to speculation over the ongoing tussle among various forces at work at Prasanthi Nilayam, the ashram of the spiritual head.

"We have no idea as to what medication was given to Saibaba before he was brought to Sri Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences (SSSIHMS). We are maintaining his case sheet only from March 28,'' said A N Safaya, SSSIHMS director at a press conference on Sunday.

He said Saibaba's health continues to cause worry and that it could take another three weeks of hospitalisation. "Though infection has come down, he cannot breathe without the help of ventilator,'' he said.

Safaya said Saibaba would not be shifted back to Prasanthi Nilayam in two weeks as announced by the Sai Central Trust. "I have no idea about trust's plans to shift him to the ashram. We will not allow him to be shifted as his condition is serious,'' he said.

This contradicts the trust's recent release that claimed Saibaba would be discharged and brought back to Yajurveda Mandir in the ashram.

On criticism that the hospital had shown favouritism to Saibaba's personal aide Satyajit by allowing him inside the ICU, Safaya said it was he who allowed Satyajit.

"He is very close to Saibaba as he takes care of all his needs. Saibaba is more attached to Satyajit than to his immedidate family members,'' he said defending Satyajit whose antecedents have come into sharp focus in the last few days. He, however, said no food or medicine is given directly by Satyajit to Saibaba.

Sources said one Dr Ayyar, cardiologist of Bangalore, was taking care of Saibaba's medical needs in the last couple of months before he fell sick.

Director, medical education, Raviraj said that best treatment is being given to Saibaba. "But it cannot be predicted as to when he would recover fully,'' he said. He said Saibaba was suffering from liver problem and has jaundice.

Anantapur district collector B Janardhan Reddy said a pulmonologist, cardiologist and a critical care expert from the US have come down to treat Baba. "His condition continues to be critical as new health problems are cropping up. But the doctors are providing the best possible medical treatment,'' he said. Saibaba on Sunday completed his 20th day of stay in the hospital.Saibaba on Sunday completed his 20th day of stay in the hospital.

Andhra rights commission seeks Sathya Sai Baba's health report - IANS | Apr 18, 2011, 09.46pm IST

"
The Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission on Monday directed the state government to submit a report on the health of spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Puttaparthi for the last three weeks.

The commission has asked chief secretary SV Prasad to submit a detailed report before April 29 on the condition of the 85-year-old spiritual leader and the treatment being given to him. The order came on a petition filed by an organisation Dalit Jana Sabha, seeking directions to the government to come out with facts relating to Baba's health.

The petitioner alleged that the authorities of the Sathya Sai super speciality hospital and Sathya Sai Central Trust were not giving a true picture of his health, causing concern to millions of his devotees in India and abroad.

A team of state government doctors, led by director of Medical Education, Department of Medical and Health, Ravi Raj, is also monitoring Baba's condition...."

Sathya Sai Baba critical but stable, may be shifted back to Prasanthi Nilayam - April 16, (IANS):
Octogenarian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba's condition remained critical Saturday but he is responding to treatment, say doctors. The godman might be shifted to his residence in about a fortnight.
The 85-year-old was admitted to hospital nearly three weeks ago. He remains on ventilator support and CRRT (continuous renal replacement therapy) at Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh.

The medical bulletin issued by the hospital Saturday morning said all his vital parameters continue to be nearly normal.

"The panel of doctors treating him are satisfied with the response, although slow, shown by him to the treatment. They are satisfied with the stability of the parameters and other indices of his health," said the bulletin.

"He continues to be in a critical state of health," the statement added.  Sai Baba, who has millions of devotees in India and abroad, was admitted to the hospital March 28 and suffers from multiple-organ dysfunction.

As a section of devotees have approached the court and the state human rights commission, seeking clarity on Baba's health condition, the mystery surrounding his illness has mounted with Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust planning to shift him from hospital to his residence at Prasanthi Nilayam.

Some of the devotees, including former MP Adikeshavulu Naidu, have alleged that a few members of the trust were responsible for his illness. He alleged that medical experts were being denied access to the spiritual leader.

The devotees are also demanding the government come out with all the details of the powerful trust, which owns assets worth thousands of crores of rupees and manages all social and charitable activities in India and abroad.

The trust late Friday issued a statement saying the health status of Baba is under constant review by the trust. "They (doctors) are confident that if the progress continues to be stable and satisfactory as at present, it might be possible to shift him from the hospital to his residence at Prasanthi Nilayam in about a fortnight," the statement said.

"His residence is being readied in all aspects to receive him and provide him the required level of follow up medical care as also emergency services," it adde

Safaya, stated Baba’s condition was stable as his health parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure and blood chemistry indications continued to be stable. PUTTAPARTHI (AP): Sathya Sai Baba, undergoing treatment for multi-organ dysfunction, continued to show signs of recovery though he is still on ventilator for respiratory support and slow dialysis, doctors attending on the godman said today.

"The health condition of Sri Sathya Sai Baba continues to be stable. All his vital parameters are nearly normal. His kidneys are continuing to show signs of recovery," a health bulletin issued by the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, where the Baba is admitted, said this evening.

"The infection in the lungs is also much less, although it is still a matter of concern. He continues to be on ventilator for his respiratory support and he is on slow dialysis," it said.

"All other vital systems are functioning satisfactorily. The panel of doctors treating him are satisfied with the progress Baba has made so far," the bulletin said.

85-year-old Sathya Sai Baba has been undergoing treatment in the hospital since March 28.

Life, meanwhile, is back to near normalcy in this town, the abode of the Baba, as his health condition continued to make steady progress.

The shops and other commercial establishments, which have been closed voluntarily following the ill-health of Sai Baba, were reopened and the town witnessed normal activity.

Authorities have relaxed the restrictions on the movement of vehicles and people. Public transport buses plied on the road where Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences was situated.

The number of policemen on duty in the town has also been reduced substantially.

The town was earlier turned into a fortress with hundreds of policemen being deployed and heavy restrictions put in place following people's anxiety over the health of the Sai Baba.

The heavy security arrangements were made as some locals allegedly tried to attack the vehicles of senior government officials.

The local residents and devotees continued their prayers for the speedy recovery of Sai Baba. Bhajans and candle light vigils continued to be held in the town.

Sai Baba's health condition shows signs of improvement: Hospital -

5th April 2011 :

Doctors treating Sri Sathya Sai Baba (85) on Monday said the state of spiritual guru had turned critical. “Vital systems are not adequately answered. His condition is critical,” said former AIIMS cardiologist Dr AN Safaya, among the physicians taking part.

“Sai Baba continues to support ventilator to assist his breathing and suction of secretions from the lungs,” said Dr. Safaya, who is director of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in Puttaparthy. He said that Baba is in continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) to help kidney function. “The panel of doctors treating him is doing its best,” said Dr. Safaya.

Sai Baba was admitted to the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in Prashanti Gram Andra Pradesh Anantapur district’s March 28 after pneumonia and respiratory problems. A team of experts is constantly monitoring his health condition. Doctors had inserted a pacemaker because of the irregular beat of his heart.

Government-appointed Dr Ravi Raj earlier allayed fears of Sai Baba’s devotees from India and abroad and said that his health had improved and there is no direct threat to his life. His blood pressure is said to be normal count, but urea in the urine is high need for dialysis.

“We all believe that he will be fine,” said Arvind Sharma, a former student of Sri Sathya Sai Higher Secondary School, Puttapurthy. “Ultimately, there are times in life Shirdi Sai Baba, when he left his body for a while and then returned,” said Sharma. Sathya Sai Baba has called himself the reincarnation of Shirdi Baba.

Dr Ravi Raj-led four-member team of experts is in Prashanti Gram to coordinate with doctors and hospital super-specialty treatment in Sai Baba’s chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and directions of the Governor ESL Narasimhan.

Andhra Pradesh and another minister J Geeta Reddy ardent believer is camping in the area and she told reporters on Sunday that Sai Baba condition was stable and called upon slaves to maintain peace and cooperate with Sai Seva Trust and the police. “Devotees should not gatecrash the hospital,” she said.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ON BHAGAWAN'S HEALTH

Updates April 2011:
Sai Baba Health News in the media/

April 4: Government sources said that the use of the word “critical” for the first time in the hospital’s bulletin to describe Sri Satya Sai Baba’s health had agitated the devotees who smashed the windscreen of Anantapur district collector, Mr Janardhan Reddy’s car when he tried to enter the hospital late on Monday evening. Despite the medical bulletin, sources in the government maintained that Baba’s condition was stable and there was no need to worry.

“His condition is stable as it was two days back. He is showing signs of improvement,” the official said. After the medical update, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, too inquired about the Baba’s health. Devotees, meanwhile, thronged the hospital and also Prashanti Nilayam, the Baba’s residence. Some wept uncontrollably while others were seen anxiously inquiring about his health.

Hotels, shops and other petty kiosks downed shutters and groups huddled in street corners as the police increased security and put up barricades at sensitive places. At the hospital, irate devotees demanded that they be allowed to see Satya Sai Baba. Protesters argued that they wanted the doctors to come out with the truth. The devotees also turned their ire on the media and asked newsmen to leave the hospital area and OB vans were forced to leave. They alleged that the media was unnecessarily playing up Baba’s illness and had made such claims in the past too forcing the hospital to issue daily bulletins.

“I am still confident that he will recover. I told him several times to take care of his health. He did not listen,” said Amma Sai Eramma, a Russian devotee of the Baba who has settled in Puttaparthi. Sri Satya Sai Baba is suffering from heart, kidney and respiratory problems and a team of specialists are treating him round the clock. The Chief Minister has also deputed a team of doctors, led by Dr Ravi Raj, director of medical education, to monitor the Baba’s condition and report to the government.

The medical bulletin issued by the hospital at 10.30 am on Monday had stated that the Baba continued to show improvement. “He is still on assisted ventilation and on kidney support through CRRT, which is a process of slow dialysis. All other clinical parameters are nearly normal.”

April 3: An eerie silence prevails over Puttaparthi, the ashram of Bhagwan Satya Sai Baba, who was admitted to the Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences Super Specialty Hospital on March 28 for heart and other ailments.

A pacemaker was implanted and he was put on dialysis on Sunday as his urea levels increased drastically while his urine volume reduced.

Devotees will miss the Baba’s famed Ugadi (Telugu New Year’s day) darshan and blessings. They have been enquiring about the Baba’s health but the hospital authorities have barred the entry of visitors fearing spread of infection.

Docs says Sai Baba condition is stable

A medical bulletin pasted on the wall gives an update of the Satya Sai Baba’s progress. His condition is said to be stable and his vital parameters are satisfactory. Dr A.N. Safaya, director of the hospital told this newspaper on Sunday that the Baba is on ventilator support for assisting respiration. “He has undergone one dialysis to assist his kidney function. Overall, his condition is satisfactory,” the doctor said.

He said the team of doctors attending on Sai Baba is satisfied with his response to the treatment. “Constant watch is kept on his health condition by the medical team.” On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, and the health minister, Dr D.L. Ravindra Reddy, a high-level team of specialty doctors arrived in Puttaparthi to monitor the progress and provide advice to doctors attending on Baba.

The team is led by Dr Ravi Raj, director of medical education, and includes Dr Shyam Sundar and Dr Nitin Kabra. Dr Raj said Sai Baba was admitted to hospital as he developed a slowing heart rate. The heart beat was below 60. A permanent pacemaker has been implanted and an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is also being used. “If we don’t see marked improvement even after dialysis, we will shift to CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy),” Dr Ravi Raj said.

CRRT is a mode of renal replacement therapy for hemodynamically unstable, fluid overloaded patients and patients with sepsis and septic shock in management of acute renal failure especially in the intensive care unit setting. The minister for major industries, Dr Geetha Reddy, an ardent devotee of Baba, is camping here since three days. “Baba’s health condition is satisfactory. The doctors have reviewed his health condition with hospital doctors,” she said.

However, Baba’s confidantes are angry at the exaggerated reports of his health condition reported on some TV channels. To counter them, Baba’s local channel Sai Darshan is appealing to devotees not to worry about his health and not to believe TV channels reports.
